Rebecca Hyams began her journey into the land of textiles while she was performing as an extra in Japanese films over ten years ago.
While visiting the country Rebecca discovered several antique Japanese kimonos at a flea market in Kyoto. She fell in love with the unique garments and brought them back to Australia with her.
Rebecca began her business, Green Tea, by importing these old kimonos into Australia and selling them to shops and other fashion designers.
After four years of selling directly Rebecca decided to add her own creative input to the pieces by turning them into garments and handbags. She has also experimented with turning the kimonos into bedspreads, home-wares, purses and evening jackets.
Despite the fact she has had no formal design training her current collection has grown to include silk bags, wraps, tube-tops and t-shirts.
Rebecca hopes to work on expanding Green Tea in 2007. She has been very involved with the performing arts in Perth as a founding member of Playback Theatre, a performer in the Flying Mortadellas and a writer of satirical comedy.
