Green Tea

Calling All Cultures

There is something about the ancient and rich culture of Japan that appeals to the Western market. Rebecca Hyams of the label Green Tea is no stranger to its appeal. She has taken elements of traditional Japanese garments and combined them with her own flair for design to create a beautiful and individual label.

Rebecca began her business by importing old kimonos into Australia and selling them as they were to the culture hungry public of WA. After four years Rebecca was inspired to add her own creative input to these pieces and create something modern and elegant from these endlessly interesting garments.

Beginning with bedspreads and home wares Rebecca soon discovered her pieces were too expensive for the local market and used her flair in business to make her product more available.

Her epiphany was bags, using the antique kimono and obi silks to create one off pieces. She has also been known to transform a kimono into an evening jacket with a matching purse.

“The diversity is amazing,” Rebecca says. “You’ll get one piece that looks really geometric and contemporary, but then you’ll find some with hand painted flowers.”

Green Tea will be showcasing their products at designedge – TCF Australia uncovered, Western Australia’s inaugural textile, clothing footwear and leather exhibition being held at the Burswood Exhibition and Convention Centre, September 23 – 25, 2003

Designedge will offer the chance for every player in the Australian textile, clothing, footwear and leather industries to expose their products to leading international and interstate buyers.

The Burswood Convention Centre will be a showcase of innovative products ranging from designer fashion, textiles, footwear, accessories, homewards, textile products and manufacturing opportunities.  A unique feature of the designedge trade exhibition will be a complimentary Business Matching service being provided by TCF WA where firms can lodge their area of interest in developing ongoing future business opportunities within the local, state, national and international TCFL industry.
