Karda Designs
The Fashion Matters for Every Woman
Barbara Matters is the designer behind the innovative indigenous label Karda Designs.
Barbara gained her love of silk and silk dyeing after attending a three day workshop in Mandurah. She immediately began setting her home up to accommodate her new passion, filling her backyard with dyeing racks made by her husband. Barbara then asked her daughter Kara Matters to join her venture and together they created Karda Designs. Barbara’s mother, Kara’s grandmother, Dorothy Bynder was then encouraged to join them and now sews the silks.
Each piece designed by Barbara and Kara is lovingly hand painted and made for storytelling in the traditional Australian Indigenous style. Barbara and Kara design their pieces to educate the wider community portraying the diversity of the Australian Aboriginal culture. Karda Designs produce a quality Indigenous product hand made by Indigenous women.
This label produces wearable art that is irreplaceable, sumptuous designs on sheer high quality silks which are then manufactured into silk scarves, wraps and sarongs.
The designs help to explain the food resources of the Australian bush and the nomadic lifestyle of the original inhabitants. Each piece telling its own story with no two pieces the same. Now a new story evolves with Karda Designs featuring at this year’s Every Woman Expo.
Karda Designs is part of the designedge fashion incubator located at the Belmont Forum Shopping Centre and the incubator has its own section at the expo.
The Designedge fashion incubator is a creative retail outlet that showcases the talents of local fashion designers. The largest community incubator of it’s kind in Australia the outlet not only gives local fashion designers a chance to display their work but it gives interested parties the chance to make an appointment and meet the designer in person.
